February 6, 2008 by urbanbirdwatchers

These are some shots of an ‘Oyster-catcher’. I snapped this little fellow out on the rocks at Oriental Bay, Wellington, New Zealand. There are heaps of these guys around on the Petone foreshore, and in the Evans Bay area, but I’d never seen one before on Oriental Bay; this is more of a popular swimming beach.
Tre cute.
Thanks for sending us the photos Ann-Marie!
Red Headed woodpecker
February 1, 2008 by urbanbirdwatchersI took this picture through a glass door as I knew if I tried to open it they would fly. When I did try they did fly. I am not an avid bird watcher, but I have not seen a Red Headed woodpecker since I was 12 years old. I am now 70. The picture was taken today 9/21/2007 in Hampton Virginia in a misty rainfall. Can you tell me if this a rare sighting for this part of the country?
Sparrows Missing

January 30, 2008 by urbanbirdwatchersI took the picture of a silvereye swooping for food in my dad’s garden when I visited my dad in New Plymouth. He gets all sort of birds visiting, from Tui to sparrows to seagulls.
When I got home my partner had bought me a urbanbirdwatcherssociety badge which I treasure!

Birds on Wire
January 30, 2008 by urbanbirdwatchersSpring is here!
January 30, 2008 by urbanbirdwatchersJust around the corner from our studio are these beautiful blossoms letting us know that the Spring is finally here! We’ve survived yet another winter.
We’ve heard in NZ that if you see a wax eye it means that the snow is coming but in Japan it’s a sign of spring. As far as sayings go, we think we like the Japanese version for this one.
Camera Shy Birds
January 30, 2008 by urbanbirdwatchersSeems like when you have no camera on you there are always so many birds around and about minding their own business. When you have a camera on you however, they become so restless and fly away as soon as you’ve got the camera ready – or so it seems. Here is a shy wax eye flying away – or maybe it’s just a really busy time of the year for them and can’t stay to pose …
